Member Spotlight – Meet The Deyo Family

Tell us all about yourself!

Mike and Laura Deyo are native Ohioans, who met at Miami University and married in Cleveland Heights in 1986. They will  celebrate their 40th anniversary this summer. They have two grown sons who live in Columbus and Austin, both married. Mike is now retired, having spent his career in corporate finance with BP and Merrill Lynch. His job took their family from Cleveland to Chicago, then Houston and on to London, England before returning to Houston and his retirement in 2016, though he maintains a home based accounting and tax practice today. Laura held various marketing and business development roles over her career, and most recently worked as a Realtor in Texas selling farm and ranch and rural real estate outside of Austin before retiring in 2021. Laura and Mike returned to the Cleveland area in 2021 to be closer to their parents.

Mike is a lifelong musician and avid reader. Laura loves to cook, entertain and puzzle. She has even coerced Mike into puzzling with her in the winter. Many of their hobbies center around physical fitness, and Wembley is a big part of that! They also enjoy hiking the many beautiful parks in the area and gardening and golfing. Travel has been a big feature of their retirement as well, with recent trips to cruise the Rhine River, visit the Adriatic Coast and an upcoming Danube cruise this summer. They are also exploring within the US, targeting national parks and other places they haven’t yet visited.

Where is one place that is still on your bucket list, and why did you originally have the location on the list?

“Thailand and Bali! Our eldest son went there for his honeymoon a few years ago and has convinced us that we should go as a family. It is now on our bucket list!”

Why did your family decide to join Wembley?

Wembley is just over a mile from the Deyo’s home in South Russell. They love the convenience and are often there more than once a day for an activity. One of the key factors that made them choose Wembley was that they could work out, take classes and lessons, play tennis and pickleball all at the same place. Both enjoy playing on USTA teams for Wembley. The Deyo’s appreciate the improvements the Dave and Kelly have made and the unwavering commitment and enthusiasm of the fitness staff and tennis pros. They love the atmosphere at the club and many  of the new friendships they have formed since returning to northeast Ohio are through our time spent at Wembley with the many wonderful, friendly members.

Staff Spotlight – Meet Jessica Pisano

Fitness Instructor

FUN FACT

“Hey Wembley Family! I’m Jessica or Jess, but if you call me Jessy, I won’t turn around…”

Jessica was born in Princeton, NJ… which basically makes her a Jersey girl, even though her parents moved to Salt Lake City, UT when she was just a baby. Jess’ dad’s job took them to NE Ohio, where she made her way back to (unintentionally) after completing physical therapy school at St. Louis University (the place Jess met her husband and the father of their 2 crazy boys) and post doctoral work at University of Illinois in Chicago.

Jess is a Taurus sun sign (“which means I’m inherently stubborn”) and it took her 11 years to finally go off on her own and open her own business, The Fusion Physio, focused on well-care, fitness and coaching! “We’ve been serving the Chagrin Valley since 2022 and I am eternally grateful for my clients, mentors and family for helping make it all happen!”

She loves writing poetry (“much of which is darkly inspired by my own mental emotional struggles and grief after my only brother’s passing in 2024”), and currently into watching SLU basketball  (GO BILLIKENS!!) and The Pitt. While many of you know her love for music, she misses reading after having her kids, so she finds it easier to have them read to her… she’s currently listening to Strong Ground by Brene Brown (“you can’t go wrong with any of her books!!”) and Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir!

FAVORITE EXERCISE

“Total toss up when it comes to my favorite exercise!! Obviously, I love yoga and barre… but I also love cycling (indoor or outdoor) and actually started my teaching journey on the bike! However, if I HAD to choose, it’s water skiing! While we may be teaching the kids to downhill ski as of this season and I have learned to love it for many reasons (ask me!!), it’s on the water where I feel like I am flying, not to mention, I can even do yoga on the slalom if the lake is glass!! When it comes to teaching, I love it all, but am obsessed with the vibe in the yoga room, so Power Yoga takes the cake there!”

You can find Jessica at Wembley teaching yoga classes.  Great rhythm, strong minds and bodies, and lots of smiles!

Irish Beef Stew

Ingredients

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Total Cook:  ~ 1hr 15minutes

Serving: 6

Ingredients

3 Tbsp olive oil (divided)

2lb beef chuck stew meat, cubed into 1″ pieces

1 yellow onion finely chopped

2 medium carrots, peeled & cut into rounds

2 celery ribs, finely chopped

3 garlic cloves, minced

3 medium russet potatoes, peeled, cut into large chunks

4 cups low-sodium beef broth

1 (11.2oz) bottle Guinness

2 tsp fresh thyme

Finely chopped fresh parsley, for serving

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

First: In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, heat 2 Tbsp. oil. Season beef with salt and pepper. Working in batches if needed, add beef to pot and cook on all sides until browned, about 10 minutes total. Transfer beef to a plate.

Second:In the same pot over medium heat, heat the remaining 1 Tbsp. oil. Cook onion, carrots, and celery, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 7 minutes; season with salt and pepper. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute more.

Third:Return beef to pot, then add potatoes, broth, beer, and thyme. Scrape bottom of pot to release any browned bits. Bring to a boil, then immediately reduce heat to medium-low and bring to a simmer; season with salt and pepper. Cover and let simmer until beef and potatoes are fork-tender, about 30 minutes.

Fourth: Divide stew among bowls & top with parsley!

Wellness Tips – Spring is here!

Spring Cleaning

Clearing clutter and putting your things where they belong and out of your path will help you clear your mind and check items off your mental checklist.

Eat More Greens

Try swapping these out for lighter dishes that better reflect the new season, like salads or fish. The greenery that is starting to emerge around you may inspire you to add green foods into your diet more often.
